Coca-Cola vs. Iconica
After opening game losses, both Coca-Cola and Iconica were looking for their first win and it was Iconica that controlled throughout with an impressive defensive performance that held Coca-Cola off the scoresheet in the opening half. Failing to convert on two penalty 4’s and their three shot attempts, Coca-Cola found themselves trailing as the young players on Iconica took advantage of their opportunities. Three goals from Peke Gonzalez along with two goals from Dylan Rossiter had Iconica up 6-0 at halftime.
Holding a large lead, Iconica continued to play an organized defensive style, with Sugar Erskine finally breaking through for Coca-Cola scoring a goal in each of the fourth and fifth chukkers. With Sebastian Merlos content to manage the game from the back, Rossiter brought his goal total to four in an efficient performance. Patron Maureen Brennan scored her first goal in the final chukker to complete the dominant 11-5 win.
SD Farms vs. Tonkawa
The closest game of the day saw a battle between Sapo Caset and Juan Martin Obregon as the two players combined for 16 of the 21 goals in the game. A fast-paced opening half saw few fouls as both teams ran end to end in an open style of play. After Caset’s third consecutive goal for Tonkawa, it was Jeff Hildebrand that added to Tonkawa’s lead with his first goal of the game. SD Farms pressured Tonkawa for the remainder of the chukker, ending with a penalty 3 conversion by Obregon to once again tie the score. Active throughout the game, Sayyu Dantata put SD Farms ahead in the game, while a more organized defensive stand saw Sapo Caset contained and held off the scoresheet, giving SD Farms the 6-5 advantage.
Neither team held more than a one-goal lead at the end of each chukker, as the pace slowed in the second half due to an increased foul count from both teams. Committing 11 fouls in the second half, SD Farms saw their lead slip away, with Caset converting four penalty attempts in the second half. Ultimately, the additional penalty attempts for Caset, including two penalty 2 conversions in the final chukker, brought Caset’s total to nine goals for the game and gave Tonkawa the narrow one goal victory.
La Indiana vs. Patagones
The final game of the day saw a closely-fought contest between La Indiana and Patagones with the duo of Tomas Garcia del Rio and Santiago Toccalino, winning the game late after accounting for all but one of Patagones’ 12 goals. Conceding one goal on handicap to begin the game, Patagones brought the game back into a tie by the end of the first chukker. An impressive second chukker saw Patagones pull away in the game, outscoring La Indiana 3-0 thanks to an efficient team offense that saw all three goals assisted by a different player. La Indiana had their chances throughout the first half but shot just 1 for 7 from the field and were fortunate to be down by just two goals, thanks to two penalty goals from Facundo Obregon.
Utilizing Michael Bickford in the number one position, La Indiana fought back to take the lead in the fourth chukker, with Bickford scoring his second and third goals of the game. Struggling with fouls throughout the game, Patagones also conceded two more penalty goals off the mallet of Obregon, leaving them trailing for the first time since the first chukker. After restoring the tie in the fifth chukker, the two teams entered the final chukker deadlocked, in what would be a fast-paced final seven minutes. Combining for six goals, Patagones sealed the victory after an impressive knock-in run from Toccalino was quickly followed by a throw-in goal for Garcia del Rio with little time remaining.
